  • Our B.A.R.F.:

Most dog owners recognize that there is an on-going crisis with commercially available dog foods, the ways we feed our dogs/pets, and actually the way we feed ourselves. To prove it to yourself all you have to do is to read the label on your dog food packaging or newspaper headlines. We are a nation of a free choice, but in actuality our choices in dog food/pet food are very limited. Being a yoga teacher and a physician family, after many debates, we choose to feed our dogs, what is called B.A.R.F. (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet, which became popular in the 90s and has grown progressively into acceptance since. This diet takes into consideration biological nature of the dog and the 100 thousand years of its evolution. After thoroughly researching the subject on MEDLINE and PUBMED (which is our tax money at work: the Library of Congress medical literature database), books, magazines, blogs, discussion groups etc., we have modified the nutritional guidance to fit into our lifestyle. To formulate and distribute our dog suppleTreats™ we took into consideration guidance from PETA and regulatory agencies such as AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials), Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR), Earth and Life Studies (DELS), and the national academies (Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats, May 2006, Nutrient Requirements of Horses: Sixth Revised Edition 2007). Now we do make our dogs' food from scratch and we would like to share this endeavor with you.

Much has been written on the subject, here are principles we follow:

    • High proportion of meat protein to quality grain protein
    • Calcium/phosphorus/magnesium balance due to the proper selection of meaty bone cuts
    • Low calories/high nutrient and mineral proportion
    • Balance of nutritional elements
    • Complete nutrition over time
    • Occasional fasting
    • Variety
    • Breed specific/origin specific ingredients
    • Recreational chewing bones
    • Specially formulated treats
    • NO unnecessary supplementation

B.A.R.F. diet provides many documented benefits for your dog and your household:

    • Long-term health of your dog will make your veterinarian happy at annual check-ups
    • No need to purchase topical treatments for skin allergies, flea, digestion etc.

What our dogs are eating tonight:

Meet Lexa (our German Shepherd Dog, a female, who was born in February 2007, she weights about 60 pounds with very high activity level) and Tootsie Roll (our Chinese Pug, a female, who was born in August 2000, weights about 23 pounds with low to moderate activity level and slightly overweight).

Our dogs have been eating the raw B.A.R.F. based diet since May, 2007. Here is what's for dinner tonight:

Tootsie Roll: chicken wings with chicken gizzards, with multi-mix consisting of well cooked organic oatmeal and with finely chopped salad [raw spinach, peaches, apple, chia seeds, garlic, ginger, turmeric, goji berries, basil, raw muscadine grape vinegar and sunflower oil (we made enough salad for ourselves to share with our dogs)].

Lexa: turkey wings with chicken gizzards with the above multi-mix salad. To provide variety over time we choose from the following ingredients

    1. Raw meaty bones such as: chicken wings, backs, and necks; turkey wings, necks, and thighs; pig necks; lamb; venison; etc.

    2. Raw organ meats. Also, our treats are made mostly with specific organ meats to provide zink and copper for a overall balanced nutrition.

    3. Raw Beef knuckles for recreational chewing (which is shown to exercise EVERY muscle in the dog's body) with bone marrow which is a source of unique nutritional factors such as alkalized nutritional fat and acetyl-L-carnitine.

    4. Well cooked (it also can be sprouted for a truly raw meal) low glycemic and low gluten grains such as oatmeal, millet, or buckwheat, nuts and seeds in small quantities.

    5. Baked or raw vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, beats, squash, whatever is in season.

    6. Variety of lettuces and greens always raw and well chopped for better digestion surface with fresh herbs from the garden such as basil, dill, cilantro, parsley, arigula, also, garlic, turmeric, ginger, etc.
